Two Wolves Inside Us: a Cherokee Story

One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, ‘My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is good.  It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: ‘Which wolf wins?’

The old Cherokee simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’

I Think I Can

I am smart and capable in your eyes
When possibility appears
Your mindful listening, gentle words
Delight in what you do,
Form the matrix that supports me
As I climb and try,
Try and correct, try and correct.
And I think I may, and then I will
Until I think I can
I think I can!
Without a should and never a why,
You knew I could
And then, I did.

Fully Alive

I will not die an unlived life.
I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire.
I choose to inhabit my days,
To allow my living to open me,
To make me less afraid, more accessible,
To loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise.
I choose to risk my significance;
To live so that which came to me as seed
Goes to the next as blossom and
That which came to me as blossom,
Goes on as fruit.
